Structured exam prep that leaves nothing to chance
Exam preparation at Your Tutor Guide goes well beyond revision. It’s a structured, specification-driven programme covering past papers, mark scheme technique, timed practice, gap analysis, and board-specific strategy, all delivered by tutors who achieved top grades in the very exams your child is sitting.
1. Past Paper Practice
Past papers are the single most effective revision tool, and our tutors use them strategically. Sessions include working through genuine past papers from your child’s specific exam board under guided conditions. The tutor identifies patterns in question types, highlights recurring examiner favourites, and makes sure your child has seen every style of question before they open the real paper.
Tutors use papers spanning at least three years of past sittings, plus specimen papers for newer specifications. Each paper is followed by a structured debrief to identify exactly where marks were gained and lost.
2. Mark Scheme Technique
Knowing the content is only half the challenge. The other half is knowing how examiners want to see it presented. Our tutors teach students how to read and interpret mark schemes so they understand what earns marks and what doesn’t.
This includes training on command words (analyse, evaluate, assess, compare), understanding the difference between content marks and skill marks, and learning how to structure answers that hit every mark point without wasting time. Students learn to think like an examiner, which transforms how they approach written answers.
3. Exam Timing and Conditions Practice
Running out of time is one of the most common reasons students underperform. Our tutors run timed practice sections during sessions so students develop a realistic sense of how long they can spend per question.
This includes full timed paper attempts under exam conditions, as well as targeted timed sections for higher-mark questions that typically take longer. Students build the discipline of moving on when time is up, knowing how to secure maximum marks within the time available rather than writing everything they know on a single question.
4. Specification Gap Analysis
Every specification has content that students tend to skip, underestimate, or simply forget to revise. Our tutors conduct a systematic gap analysis early in the tutoring relationship, mapping your child’s current knowledge against every point on the official specification.
This produces a clear picture of what your child knows, what they partially know, and what they have not yet covered. From there, sessions are prioritised to close the highest-impact gaps first, ensuring nothing is left unrevised before exam day.
5. Mock Exam Sessions
Separate from regular past paper practice, our tutors schedule dedicated full mock exam sessions at key points, typically 8 weeks, 4 weeks, and 2 weeks before the exam. These are full-length papers completed under strict timed conditions.
Each mock is marked against the official mark scheme, with a detailed written breakdown sent to parents. This gives a realistic prediction of your child’s likely grade and identifies last-minute areas that still need attention. Mock results are tracked over time so parents and students can see clear progress.
6. Revision Planning
Many students fail to revise effectively not because of effort, but because of planning. Our tutors help students build a personalised revision timetable that balances all their subjects, prioritises weaker areas, and includes built-in review days to reinforce retention.
Revision plans are built around spaced repetition and active recall, not endless re-reading of notes. The tutor reviews and adjusts the plan as mock results come in, keeping the approach targeted and evidence-based right up to the exam.
7. Exam Board–Specific Strategy
Edexcel, AQA, and OCR don’t test the same content in the same way. Our tutors are matched to your child’s specific exam board and teach the strategies that work for that board’s particular approach.
- Edexcel tends to favour data interpretation and application-style questions, particularly in subjects like Economics and Politics. Tutors focus on source analysis and real-world application.
- AQA often emphasises extended writing and evaluation. Tutors train students in paragraph structuring, counter-argument technique, and meeting AQA’s specific assessment objectives.
- OCR frequently tests breadth of knowledge across topics. Tutors ensure full specification coverage and practise the synoptic-style questions that OCR favours at A-Level.
This board-specific approach means your child never learns generic exam technique. They learn the exact skills and strategies that their examiners reward.
8. Examiner-Style Feedback
Our tutors don’t just tell students whether an answer is right or wrong. They give the kind of feedback an examiner would: specific, mark-scheme-referenced comments showing exactly where marks were earned and where they were lost.
Students learn to see their own work through an examiner’s eyes. This feedback loop is one of the most powerful accelerators of improvement, because it closes the gap between what a student thinks they wrote and what the examiner actually reads.
9. Last-Minute Revision Clinics
In the final week before each exam, students can book focused 45-minute or 60-minute revision clinics targeting specific topics or question types. These are intensive, high-focus sessions designed to reinforce key content and address any remaining uncertainties.
Clinics aren’t a replacement for structured preparation. They’re the finishing touch. Tutors use these sessions to run rapid-fire recall exercises, review the most likely question topics based on past exam trends, and make sure your child walks into the exam hall feeling fully prepared.
There is no separate charge for exam prep. Every session naturally integrates the techniques above alongside subject teaching. A-Level sessions are £35/hr and GCSE sessions are £28/hr.
